“Animation is big business globally and alive and well in Jamaica,” said Watkis, prinicipal of MJR Productions.

“This is the first animated movie to be distributed from Jamaica, and this means we have access to markets which we wouldn’t normally.”

The distribution will be done jointly by Tuff Gong and Universal Records. Watkis said CAKLE The Movie was done for last year’s inaugural Jamaica Film Festival, where a portion of it was premiered.
According to Watkis, the 45-minute production took two-and-a-half years to complete. Funding came from “personal monies, I got some sponsorship and partnerships”.

The project’s animator is Andre Hall, while comedian Donald ‘Iceman’ Anderson is the voice of 25 characters.

CAKLE (Cartoon Animation Komedy Laughter Entertainment) is a story about a womaniser and the problems associated with his life.

“It’s Jamaicans telling a Jamaican story. We need to more of that, “ said Watkis.

Analysts predict the global animation and gaming market will grow to US$242.93 billion this year from US$122.20 billion in 2010.

Watkis is no newbie to film. His acting credits include Better Mus’ Come and Junior, which he also produced.

Last April, Junior won Best Overall Short Film and Best Post-Production, while he copped Best Overall Actor, from the Lignum Vitae Film Festival, held at Northern Caribbean University in Manchester.
