Kenneth Branagh has the rare ability to deliver Shakespearean dialogue as if it were street talk, with an expert casualness that keeps the meaning of the language crystal clear. Indeed, in this version of Othello, Shakespeare could be considered the original gangsta rapper, busting poetic prose about an exploited black man (Laurence Fishburne), with two earrings, squiggly tattoos, and a lizard gaze, who kills his wife because he thinks she’s messing around with a trusted friend.
