Are you doing KILLER KEGELS??? Or are you doing KIND KEGELS? If you’ve ever received instructions from some random video, “tutorial” or script on the internet, chances are that you are doing KILLER KEGELS! KILLER KEGELS can actually cause more harm than good to your pelvic floor muscles and worsen any ongoing issues you maybe experiencing in your pelvic area. This is what I call KILLER KEGELS….
I know, I know…it’s a funny video. But it’s actually quite serious! Now, let me make myself clear, there is only ONE way to kegel correctly – only one way. There are no different ways of kegeling. A kegel is a kegel. My use of the terms KILLER KEGELS and KIND KEGELS are just to emphasize and differentiate between the correct way and the incorrect way. But a kegel is only a kegel when it’s done correctly.
And kegels seem to be the blanket recommendation for post-partum treatment for diastasis recti, stress incontinence and other issues related to the pelvic area. However, even kegeling correctly can actually worsen an ongoing problem if your pelvis is out of alignment or if you experience stress incontinence, diastasis recti etc as mentioned before. For example, if your pelvic floor muscles are too tight, then kegels aren’t recommended. And then, even when you’re given the all-clear to kegel, you also need to balance your kegels with reverse kegels or what we call in Tantra, Dhummo breath. Balance is key.
