Editorial
Welcome Back Welcome Back

The passion and heart I continue to lavish on Sunhead sometimes overwhelms me. Especially in the face of of the fact, that it has never been a profitable excercise in monetary terms.

By that I mean, Sunhead has never really paid its bills, and well I have done so even when I haven't been on a regular publishing schedule with the magazine.

I've asked myself what it is about Sunhead that keeps me coming back like a crack addict for more. I have pondered this, even as I am up at 3AM, knee deep in the code, or methodically loading content into the site.

A Winter Tale: An Intense Snow Globe of a Movie
Image

'A Winter Tale' reminded me of a snow globe. Not only because it happens in winter (hence snow) and not only because the world of this small black Toronto community gets shaken (as snow globes do) by the accidental shooting death of a young child ... but also because of the closeness and intimacy of everything. The feeling was of being invited into a small space (like a snow globe) to meet these characters, experienced with an emotional and visual closeness (e.g. many close up shots of their ...

The Lost Principle of Reforestation: San Fernando Hill
National Reforestation is Paving San Fernando Hill

Today, the sky cleared after days of rain and I decided to hike San Fernando Hill - not the human thoroughfare, but the back areas that used to be my haunts. I recall going up there with a short cutlass, a knife, some string, a slingshot, matches, water and some pepper sauce and salt wrapped carefully in some aluminium-foil. Should I have gotten hungry, there were fruit trees - a really nice mango tree, too, full of hornets. Should a snake wander chance by, it made a quick meal over an impromptu spit. Yes, I did, and it was pretty good.

A Trini Marathon Man
"I'm a runner," Rishi announces. He says it like Michael Imperioli's mafia lieutenant character on the Sopranos says, "I'm a soldier." He says it macho, like it's an honor, like it's an archaic trust in a modern world. He says it as though he has no choice – and wouldn't want one.

Confessions of a Department Store Santa

(First off, let me make it very clear – any views in this item, which are so vehemently expressed, are mine and not the entities that may rent my services at Christmastime, so relax! Now…)

Sweat.

Dripping into your eye and splashing onto your specs, because the red & white suit was designed for a cold New York or a semi-frigid Toronto – not an air-conditioned tropical Bridgetown, and yet you still maintain eye-contact with the little child as you have no wish to shatter its dream, as the parent screams, "Wait, so you is Ian Bourne?"
